DECLARATION OF GENERATIVE AI USE

Use of AI Tools

  • Submission of text, figures, or images created with AI, machine learning, or generative AI tools is discouraged, unless integral to the study’s research design.

  • The use of standard tools for spell-checking and grammar correction, as well as for managing bibliographic references, is permitted, as is the use of tools for linguistic rephrasing and assisted translation.

Authorship

  • AI tools cannot be authors. Human authors are fully responsible for the work, its integrity, and compliance with ethical standards.

  • The use of AI in drafting the manuscript must be limited exclusively to improving readability and language.

  • Authors must ensure that the intervention of AI does not alter the scientific meaning or originality of the work. The use of AI to generate scientific hypotheses or conclusions is prohibited.

Reviewers

  • Reviewers are fully responsible for the content and integrity of their reviews.

  • AI tools should not be used to generate or modify peer review reports for INGV journals.

  • Reviewers must maintain strict confidentiality; manuscripts or portions thereof must not be uploaded to generative AI platforms, as this violates confidentiality requirements.

  • Even using AI merely to summarize a submitted article constitutes a breach of confidentiality.

  • Editorial board
Editors and Associate Editors must not use AI to decide on the acceptance or rejection of a paper or to select reviewers.

Disclosure

  • Any use of AI in the data, analysis, or preparation of the manuscript must be disclosed (AI Declaration).

  • Include the tool name, version, manufacturer, and description of its use.

Responsible Research (AI Use)

Research involving AI tools must be conducted in a transparent and reproducible manner. Authors should clearly describe data collection and preprocessing procedures, AI model design, training, and analysis methods. Any potential biases, limitations, or risks associated with the data or AI processes must be explicitly reported. Sufficient detail should be provided to allow verification and replication of the results.
